A Love Letter to MOZART
MOZART, a child prodigy, an improviser and a virtuoso, has always been one of my favorite composers. Honored but hesitant, I wondered if I could take on this challenge when I received the invitation to be part of this festival.
It is truly a big challenge. MOZART is an amazing improviser full of personalities. With his dramatic timing, he has a strong yet effortless sense of melody. There is no doubt that I feel very connected to all of these elements. However, he often composed in the major tonality, and did not have much harmony, texture, or chromaticism as complex as those in the romantic and modern music, which is also widely used in jazz.
That was why I had to think twice if I could tastefully bring the music to maintain his unique elements within my own arrangement and musical style. It is my goal to avoid making the arrangement simply jazzier and "busier" in a sense. MOZART doesn't need that! I hope that I can soulfully express his music as a tribute to this child prodigy.
Tonight I would like the music to be pure and touching. This concert is my love letter to MOZART. What better time than the wee hours to listen to such program? Will you join me?
