2019 Weiwuying Learning and Participation: The Newly-Opened Reading Corner Invites Visitors to Set Sail in the Sea of Books
With the mission to become an “art center for everyone,” National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying) has created a unique space for the arts and culture, continuing to introduce a series of events for learning and participation. Today (19th), Weiwuying is collaborating with Taiwan Fu Hsing Cultural and Educational Foundation to announce the official opening of the Reading Corner, which is located in the Crown Hall on the 3rd floor. Visitors are welcome to browse the carefully-curated selection of books, while regular sessions of Picture Book Story Time and Read and Chat will be arranged in March.
Chien Wen-Pin, the artistic director of Weiwuying, stated that: “The January, the New York Times dubbed Weiwuying as the ‘living room of culture in Kaohsiung.’ Apart from coming to Weiwuying for performances and to admire the building design, visitors can also enroll in a series of learning and participation events. Visitors are welcome to come to Weiwuying on days other than weekends to join different interactive events and courses.”
The Reading Corner, opened today (19th), is sponsored by the Taiwan Fu Hsing Cultural and Educational Foundation. The Foundation donated 200 books at the end of last year and will continue to give 150 books every following year, which adds up to 800 books throughout the course of 5 years. In the future, Reading Corner plans to invite artists, musicians, and performers who are collaborating with Weiwuying to share their book collection.
In addition, the Reading Corner will be arranging regular interactive events, starting this March. For example, Weiwuying will be collaborating with the Dandelion Organization of Storytelling as Literacy Advocacy to present Picture Book Storytelling sessions for visitors of all ages. Picture books will be selected by professionals. On March 27th, Queen Meng Lan-Jiao, the first drag queen in Taiwan, is invited to read stories to children. Queen Meng Lan-Jiao will be teaching children gender diversity and inclusiveness through storytelling, encouraging children to be themselves. As for Read and Chat, writers, poets, illustrators, musicians, owners of independent bookstores, and other professionals are invited to share their thoughts on life and their fascinations.
Lin Yi-Zheng, the CEO of Taiwan Fu Hsing Cultural and Educational Foundation, stated that everyone needs books in their lives; not just for exams and work, but for quality family time and me time. In addition to being an art center for everyone, there are high hopes that Reading Corner will transform Weiwuying into a space for visitors to take time to nurture the mind and soul.
As an art center for everyone, Weiwuying not only stuns visitors with its spectacular architecture and variety of exciting performances. In addition to theatre, travel, and reading, the addition of the Reading Corner will enable visitors to broaden their horizons and explore the world and different cultures through reading. Furthermore, Weiwuying has designed seven events and courses that are centered around the concept of “exploring,” encouraging participation, contemplation, and inspiring all to enrich their lives.
