Weiwuying’s First Anniversary: Welcoming All for Celebrations that Coincide with the National Day Holidays
The “art center for the people,” National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying), will be welcoming its first anniversary on Sunday, the 13th of October. To share this joy, Weiwuying has organized a four-day-long series of exciting events and performances which officially commenced today (October 10th) at the strike of the gong by artistic director Chien Wen-Pin. The events coincided with the National Day Holidays, and people were seen queuing as early as 8 AM, waiting to receive entry wristbands for the programs at the Concert Hall and Recital Hall at 11 AM. The events received a warm response, with the queue extending out of sight, and all wristbands for the 3 performances at the Recital Hall were gone within an hour. Today, Weiwuying is opening its 4 venues, arranging 7 programs, 9 performances or recitals in total, for audiences. The programs added up to near 10,000 seats, a rare opportunity to experience the charm of Weiwuying and its fascinating programs.
Artistic director Chien Wen-Pin stated that with utmost courage from the venue, the hard work of the operation team, and the accompany of the people, Weiwuying has overturned the common distanced impression of performance venues and become a public space embedded in the daily lives of the people. For many, the measures of Weiwuying seem somewhat “rebellious;” in truth, the rebelliousness is based on the element of “courage,” the courage of putting ideas into action in order to expand visions and horizons. Although there is still room for improvement, this state of courage has led to the achievements of today, and allowed Weiwuying to become “an art center for the people.”
With the first anniversary approaching, Weiwuying has chosen an “unorthodox” way of celebrating. Events include large music parties showcasing pop musicians Accusefive, Evan Yo, and 9m88d, as well as outdoor markets, Earphone Cinema, and Open House performances of recitals of world-renowned Cloud Gate, Mozart’s The Magic Flute, as well as other programs. The series of events invite people to join this carefully-crafted “art” playground for the anniversary celebrations of Weiwuying.
