National Performing Arts Center - National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying) International Music Festival 2023 Work Selection / 2024 Composer Selection
From 2022, Weiwuying International Music Festival, collaborating with artistic director and curator Unsuk CHIN, pledges to be a platform for discovery and innovation, bringing and promoting music from all generations, cultures, performers, and creators. In order to raise conversations between Taiwanese composers and the world, the "2022 Weiwuying Selection plan for performance composition" was designed and executed in 2022, with four successful debut works from Taiwanese composers at the 2022 Weiwuying International Music Festival. Continuing this momentum and mission, and expanding the possibilities of creation, we hereby plan the Weiwuying International Music Festival 2023 Work Selection / 2024 Composer Selection. The selected works will be performed in the 2023 Weiwuying International Music Festival from April 19 to 20 at Weiwuying Recital Hall. The selected composers will be commissioned by Weiwuying, and the commissioned works will be premiered at the 2024 Weiwuying International Music Festival. We hope to take this opportunity to stimulate the creative energy of Taiwanese composers, cultivate music and art talent, and set foot on the international stage of contemporary music.
I. Organizer: National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying) (hereinafter referred to as "the venue")
II. Applicant qualifications:
Applicants must be composers engaged in the creation of musical works who are "natural persons," born after January 1, 1982 (under 40 years old.) Applicants must be Republic of China nationals or foreigners who hold Republic of China resident certificate.
III. Selection conditions
A. 2023 Work Selection. At most 2 works will be selected. Requirements as follow:
- The instrumentation of the work must include at least 5 and no more than 20 performers.
- The work should be at least 10 and no more than 15 minutes long.
- The work should be an original piece created by the same person who submits it. It is acceptable for the work to have been previously published and/or have participated in other competitions or selection activities if the said competitions or selection activities permit.
B. 2024 Composer Selection. At most 2 composers will be selected.
IV. Reward
A. 2023 Work Selection:
- Each selected work will be rewarded with NT$50,000 (tax included), which includes license fees for public performance and other uses.
- The selected works will be presented at Weiwuying Recital Hall between April 19 and 20, performed by Weiwuying Contemporary Music Ensemble and conducted by Clement POWER.
- Those who participate in the selection may have the opportunity to join the Composition Workshop by international composers Unsuk CHIN.
B. 2024 Composer Selection:
- Those who participate in the selection will be able to join the Composition Workshop by international composers Unsuk CHIN.
- The selected composers will be commissioned by the venue and guided by renowned composer Unsuk CHIN to create a 15-minute piece for the 2024 Weiwuying International Music Festival and perform it publicly. The venue will discuss separately with each composer regarding the instrumentation of the work, fee, and schedule of commissioned work, and a commission contract will be signed.
V. Selection method and implementation schedule
A. The deadline for applications is 23:59 on December 4, 2022 (Sunday) (based on the server time.)
B. Applications will be reviewed, and the finalists will be announced on Weiwuying's official website on January 12, 2023 (Thursday.)
C. The judge of this selection will be Unsuk CHIN.
VI. Registration and materials submission
From now till Dec 4, 2022 (Sunday), applicants can fill in the application information on our official website and upload the required materials.
The application materials required are as follows:
A. 2023 Work Selection:
- One original composition score. It should be a single clear, readable file in
- PDF format only. Ensure pages are in the correct order.
- One audio file (in MP3, WMA or WAV format) or MIDI file for the submitted work.
- Program notes in Chinese and English for the submitted work. The Chinese notes should be under 600 words and the English should be under 500.
- Biography in Chinese and English. Chinese Biography should be under 400 words, and English should be under 300.
- Scan of ID card or resident certificate.
- Scan of Disclosure statement under the "Act on Recusal of Public Servants Due to Conflicts."
- Scan of Weiwuying International Music Festival – 2023 Work Selection Consent Form.
- Consent form authorizing use of personal data (you can directly accept it on the application website.)
B. 2024 Composer Selection:
- Two original composition scores. Each score should be a single clear, readable file in PDF format only. Ensure pages are in the correct order. There are no restrictions on instrumentation, length, or whether the compositions have been published or not. Applicants should select works that express their personal creative style and composition skills.
- One audio file (in MP3, WMA or WAV format) or MIDI file for the submitted work.
- Biography in Chinese and English. Chinese Biography should be under 400 words, and English should be under 300.
- Scan of ID card or resident certificate.
- Scan of Disclosure statement under the "Act on Recusal of Public Servants Due to Conflicts."
- Scan of Weiwuying International Music Festival –2024 Composer Selection Composition Submission Affidavit.
- Consent form authorizing use of personal data (you can directly accept it on the application website.)
VII. Notifications:
- Applicants may apply for both the 2023 Work Selection and 2024 Composer Selection.
- Applicants who apply for the 2023 Work Selection will submit one work only. Applicants are allowed to apply for subsidy from other organizations for the submitted work, if the other organizations' submission requirements permit.
- Applicants who apply for the 2023 Work Selection should read the Agreement of 2023 Weiwuying International Music Festival Work Selection Submission thoroughly to understand their relevant rights and obligations, before uploading the signed document.
- Applicants shall ensure that the works submitted do not violate laws and regulations, and do not infringe the rights of any third party (including but not limited to copyright and distribution rights.) Applicants should provide the venue with any relevant legal licensing documents for reference, but the aforementioned documents do not exempt or reduce the legal or compensation liability of the applicants.
- The venue has the right to modify the selection method, related details, and final interpretation.
