Shortlisted Candidates for Screendance submissions to 2024 Taiwan Dance Platform
Since the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying) opened a call for submission of screendance films worldwide in July for the 2024 Taiwan Dance Platform Dance, the History of Body, it has received 172 submissions from all over the world. Set to rediscover the vocabulary and dialogue of bodies through film as a media, shortlisted works by professional juries will be presented from November 2 (Sat.) to December 1 (Sun.) in Weiwuying's Crown Hall 3F & Lecture Hall and Kaohsiung Film Archive for free admission

William LÜ|Director
William LÜ is a cinematographer and filmmaker with a unique background in dance. He began as a founding member of the Los Angeles-based contemporary dance company Backhausdance, earning recognition such as Male Dancer of the Year by the Beverly Hills Journal in 2004 and Lester Horton Awards in 2007 and 2008. He also performed with Het Internationaal Danstheater, receiving rave reviews for productions like Mannen van de Tango and Crazy Blues, and served as a guest teacher at Codarts and Holland Dans Festival.
William shifted to filmmaking, starting with his dance short film, Partita for One, which premiered at the Scottish Dance Film Festival and appeared on the BBC Big Screen in the UK. His follow-up film, STILL, combined movement with visual storytelling and won Best of Fest at the International Speechless Film Festival and earned official selections at notable festivals like the Busan International Short Film Festival, Cinedans, and the San Francisco Dance Film Festival.
In 2019, William co-founded Crazy Family Productions, a bilingual video production company in Taipei, producing various visual content including commercials, music videos, shorts, and educational programs. As a filmmaker, William Lü continues to innovate, merging his passion for movement with visual storytelling.
PENG Hsiao-Yin|Director of Dancecology
PENG Hsiao-Yin is the Artistic Director of Dancecology and the founder of Dancescreen Collective Taiwan. She holds an M.F.A. in Graduate School of Choreography at Taipei National University of the Arts and a B.A. from the Agronomy Department at National Taiwan University. PENG was formerly a dancer with the Neo-Classic Dance Company.
Her work centers on the embodiment of and interaction with nature, focusing on dance films and environmental theater. In recent years, PENG has led dance film workshops in collaboration with the Taipei Performing Arts Center and Circling the Brink (Australia), and initiated the Island Dance-film Project, conducting residencies and workshops across the nation. Her achievements include the Grand Prize at the 2017 Jumping Frames International Dance Video Festival in Hong Kong and the 2013 Taishin Arts Award for Art as Action: a Cultural Action at the Plum Tree Creek.
YANG Wei-hsin|Director
YANG Wei-hsin is a distinguished filmmaker and editor who graduated from Columbia University's School of the Arts in New York. His graduation project garnered the prestigious Directors Guild of America Award for Best Student Film. After returning to Taiwan, YANG dedicated himself to film editing, gaining recognition for his work across various genres. His notable editing credits include the short films Little Big Women, How I Learned to Lie, and Swingin', as well as the feature films The Laundryman, Apolitical Romance, and Lan-lin Theater.
In 2022, YANG completed the independently produced documentary feature Ballet In Tandem, a project that took nine years to realize. The film received the International Documentary Feature Jury Prize at the 11th American Documentary and Animation Film Festival (AmDocs) and was selected for the 19th EBS International Documentary Festival (EIDF) in Korea. That same year, YANG expanded his creative repertoire by directing his first music video, Night Heron feat. Hsu Yu-ying, which was nominated for Best Electronic Song at the 14th Golden Indie Music Awards.
In 2023, YANG released Triptych, a documentary capturing the creative process of jazz pianist HSU Yu-ying.
SU Che-hsien|Director
SU Che-hsien was born in Taipei in 1982 and holds a Master's degree in Art from the National Taiwan University of Arts. At the age of 27, he won Best Documentary at the 47th Golden Horse Awards for his debut film, Hip-Hop Storm, making him the youngest recipient of the award.
In 2016, SU produced the documentary feature Fight for Justice, which premiered in Taiwanese theaters and was later selected for the Hong Kong Independent Film Festival. It was also screened in cinemas in Leipzig and Berlin, Germany. In 2020, he completed the short narrative film Nine Shots, focusing on human rights issues, and it was shortlisted for numerous European and Asian film festivals. SU has served as a judge for both the Golden Horse Awards and the Taipei Film Awards, consistently creating both documentaries and narrative films. In 2022, he released his first feature film, Summer, and his upcoming music documentary, Rocking Against the Tides, is set to be released in 2024.

Raymond WONG|Deputy General Director of the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying)
Raymond WONG serves in performing arts for more than 20 years as a producer of international theatre and dance performances, advocator of arts literacy and creative learning, as well as facilitator of international networks for dance companies and venues in the region. During his tenure as Project Manager and later Managing Director of the City Contemporary Dance Company in Hong Kong from 2006 to 2021, he developed Jumping Frames International Dance Video Festival and initiated screendance projects with West Kowloon Cultural District (Hong Kong), Cinemovement (Singapore), among others.

CHOU Shu-yi
CHOU Shu-yi has been an Artist-in Residence at National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying) since 2020. CHOU is also the curator of Taiwan Dance Platform, a programme based in southern Taiwan, which aims to serve as a point of connection for contemporary dance in Asia. Using dance as a language to communicate with the world, CHOU focuses on the relationships between humans and society. In his creations, he harnesses the power of cross-disciplinary collaborations to express the public nature of arts.
Between 2022 and 2024, he also initiated the Bolero in Kaohsiung project, bringing dance performances out of the theatre setting and into the community, and at the same time, nurturing the next generation of dancers in Taiwan.
