It was originally co-produced with Deutsche Oper am Rhein, but has in the meanwhile been licensed or rented to and performed by several opera houses, including Los Angeles Opera, Minneapolis Opera, National Opera Warsaw, Helsinki National Opera, Teatro Real Madrid, Rome Opera and others. Tours of the Komische Oper Berlin ensemble performing this Magic Flute production include venues in Shanghai, Guangzhou, Edinburgh Festival, Barcelona (Liceu Opera), Paris (Opéra Comique), Moscow (Bolshoi New Stage), Tokyo, Hiroshima, Osaka, Beijing, Budapest, Adelaide and Auckland among others.
\n\nThe Magic Flute marked 1927's first opera, first large scale production and first time tackling a pre-existing work. Co-conceived by 1927's Co-Artistic Directors Paul Barritt and Suzanne Andrade in collaboration with Barrie Kosky, internationally renowned Australian director and Artistic Director of The Komische Opera Berlin, the team worked more than two years on this production, which combines music, live action on stage and fantastic, hand-crafted animation in a unique and revolutionary way. In every image, the animation, Mozart’s music, coming from the pit and delivering most of the cues, and the action on stage are closely interwoven. All dialogues are reduced to silent movie scenes, accompanied by additional Mozart music played in the style of silent movie piano music.
\n\n\n\n
The Magic Flute appears to give rise to more questions and mysteries rather than provide answers. At the end the immense fantasy of this magical opera defies all logic and reason. Its secret lies in deeper layers of fundamental human experiences for which the fairytale appears simply to be the most adequate form of expression and only music finds the appropriate language. It is with good reason that the "eponymous hero" of the opera is an instrument, or quite simply: music.
