Synopsis
Mice's Wedding
Once upon a time, a couple of mice planned to choose the most powerful and talented guy in the world as their daughter's husband. They had considered the Sun, the Cloud, and the Wall, but in the end they realized mice could be as talented. Eventually, they decided to marry their daughter to a young and strong mouse. The wedding day was on January the 3rd of Lunar Calendar, so people called the day as “The Day of the Mice’s Wedding.”
A Chance Encounter
Hsian Chi-Chun was a nature-lover and a gifted student. He usually travelled everywhere. And Mr. Pan Ron lives in leisurely retirement with his beautiful daughter named Pan Yu-Chi. One day, Mr. Pan and Yu-Chi wandered through the streets and met the rich but lazy dawdler Du Shin along with his servants. Du flirted with Yu-Chi and wanted to bring her away. Her father asked for help along the street, and Hsiao answered to his call. Hsiao fought off Du and rescued Yu-Chi. Yu-Chi then fell in love with this handsome hero, and they soon married as husband and wife.
The Seven Heroes and Five Gallants: Xian-Kong Island
An adaptation of the novel The Seven Heroes and Five Gallants. Xian-Kong Island is where the five gallants (five mice) live. The story begins with the time that the island was conquered by the villain Han Lu-Chung, and “Southern Hero” Zhan Zhao and “Northern Hero” Ouyang Chun assisted the five gallants to take back their island.
Chen Hsi-huang
Master puppeteer Chen Hsi-huang is the son of master puppetry artist, Li Tien-lu. He has followed his father to give perform tours since young age, cooperating with many glove puppetry artists and theater troupes. Later on, he brought together all performance techniques into his own distinctive performance arts. With masterly skills in operating puppets, he brings to life various roles in glove puppetry such as sheng (old and young male characters), dan (old and young female characters), jing (male characters with painted faces), mo (old men), and chou (comic characters); they are agile, lively, and as real as life in his hands. He was awarded Global Chinese Culture & Arts Award in 2008. Until now, he continues to perform on stage and is one of the few masters at the age of 90 to perform a full play.
In addition to performance, Chen Hsi-huang is also skilled at crafting elaborate and sophisticated puppet props from headgears, weaponry, and other props. These props have been not only for performances, but also sought after among collectors of crafts to add into their puppetry collections in recent years.
Chen has witnessed the spectacular scenes of puppetry in late Japanese-Occupied Period and early Taiwan Recession Period (1940s and 1950s), as well as has gone through the age of social changes and the fall of traditional drama. His life is like a living history of modern glove puppetry development.
Chen Hsi-huang has been devoted in glove puppetry for his lifetime. He takes the responsibility of handing down glove puppetry culture as his own. In order to do so, he founded Chen Hsi-huang Traditional Puppet Troupe with his disciples. Chen wants to not only pass on the beauty of glove puppetry, but also to exchange experiences with other performance arts, creating another summit for Taiwan traditional culture of glove puppetry.
