【2020 Taiwan Dance Platform】Open Studio - Encounter Passion and Creation
The 2020 Taiwan Dance Platform launched the “Open Studio” project in support of young Taiwanese choreographers and their developing works. While these choreographers continue to experiment and create in Weiwuying’s rehearsal studios, they will introduce their work-in-progress to local and foreign curators and producers, and engage in direct exchanges and dialogues, where first-hand observation and experience will be shared.
For the first edition of the Open Studio, we invite "Beings" by WANG Yeu-kwn and "Burnt" (work in progress) by LEE Chen-wei and Vakulya ZOLTAN. The former is choreographed by WANG who was selected artist for the 12th Young Stars New Vision, while the latter is the latest collaboration between LEE and ZOLTAN, whose Together Alone was also included in the 2018 Taiwan Dance Platform. "Burnt" (work in progress) earned the recognition of Centre Chorégraphique National de Rillieux-la-Pape, which earned Lee an international residency in the 2020/2021 Taiwan-France Co-production Project. Both two groups of artists will share their observation, research and future approach with the audience.
Presentation 1
WANG Yeu-Kwn 1+1 Deconstruction of “Beings”
In calligraphy, the character for “human” is composed of a “Piě (bend)” and a “Nà (slant).” The various relationships we’ve established make who we are today. Why do relationships have such a formative effect on us? How many indescribable meanings do relationships possess?
"Beings" is a duet and an attempted deconstruction of relationships that scrutinizes the construction of “Us” by reconstructing our own experience through different mediums. "Beings" focuses on a relationship between two people whose shift between opposition and harmony creates a new physical language.
"Beings" invites you to open up the studio, walk from the auditorium to the stage, and join in on a different viewing experience by dissecting “Piě” and “Nà” through demonstration, images, and sharing.
Presentation 2
LEE Chen-Wei x Vakulya ZOLTAN "Burnt"(work in progress)
LEE Chen-Wei and Vakulya ZOLTAN (Lee/Vakulya), since their first collaboration, the two have gradually constructed their works into a trilogy, starting from their own exploration and excavation with "Together Alone" and "The Passing Measures" to the pre-sent work in progress, "Burnt" (work in progress), it connects the pursuit of physical essence, and desires to condense in the moment of space and time, which is the consensus of the two people's cooperation and creation along the way. In this presentation, we will introduce the first two works, then lead you to the creation process of the third piece, which focus on the state of mind and the body of a burned-out human being. What strikes us in how the phenomenon of burnout is, although it being a burning is-sue, in our modern societies we approach it with silence and doesn't recognize it's true message. The lack of bilateral honesty and undervaluation that is often present in work situations or in relationships, slowly burns ones inside till the flames can even catch on our surroundings as well.
