VERDI - La Traviata
The great operas of Giuseppe Verdi not only reflect the turbulent events of the 19th-century but also — in providing the soundtrack to the unification of the Italian nation — influenced them. Yet La Traviata, his most beloved work, is a simple and heartbreaking story of two young lovers, the deeply romantic Alfredo and the doomed courtesan Violetta, torn apart by the hypocrisies of a lavishly decadent high society and the cruelties of fate.
Verdi's 1853 masterpiece contains some of the best-known music in all opera, with standout moments for orchestra and chorus as well as for soloists. After attending a performance, Alexandre Dumas fils, the author of the novel on which it is based, declared the melodies so sincere and moving that "nobody would have remembered my Lady of the Camellias in 50 years but for Verdi, who made it immortal."
Opera is at the heart of the artistic life of Weiwuying and has become particularly important during the coronavirus pandemic. In August 2020 we staged a production of Puccini's Turandot in collaboration with Deutsche Oper am Rhein, proving that Taiwan is capable of mounting world-class opera productions for live audiences despite the pandemic. Our production of La Traviata, co-produced by the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying) and the Kaohsiung Spring Arts Festival, premiered in 2016 to great acclaim and now returns to Weiwuying's stage as a beacon of live opera at a time when so many opera houses around the world are sadly silent.
Director YANG Shih-ping has chosen a contemporary staging for this timeless story of love, bravery, sacrifice and loss. Music director CHIEN Wen-pin will lead a cast of top Taiwanese soloists accompanied by a Kaohsiung-based orchestra and chorus. At this difficult time for so many, Weiwuying welcomes you to join us in celebrating not only Verdi's great work, but also the magic and importance of live opera itself.
