The melody VERDI composed for the character is so sincere and moving that it touched even Alexandre DUMAS fils, the author of the novel on which the opera was based. After seeing the opera, DUMAS fils said: "Nobody would have remembered my Lady of the Camellias in 50 years but for VERDI, who made it immortal."
\n\nWeiwuying's opera productions in recent years have all been performed to great acclaim. For example, the Weiwuying production of Turandot made a return to the stage during the pandemic and received global attention, as it proved that Taiwan is capable of mounting a worldclass production of an iconic opera. La traviata, co-produced by National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying) and Kaohsiung Spring Arts Festival, won great acclaim in 2016 with its premiere. In spring 2021, the production will return on Weiwuying's stage. Director YANG Shih-Ping will be using contemporary staging to create this magnificent and exquisite portrayal of a love story that feels at once magical and true to life, while Art Director CHIEN Wen-Pin will lead a performance given by a cast of top Taiwanese vocalists accompanied by a local Kaohsiung-based orchestra and chorus. With such a talented cast and crew, this production will no doubt boost the reputation of Weiwuying and opera productions in Taiwan.
\n\nFrom the delightful Libiamo ne' lieti calici—an ode to seizing the day—to the sad Parigi, o cara, noi lasceremo that prefaces the lovers' separation by death, Weiwuying's production of La Traviata extracts love in its purest form in this depiction of the virtuous act of a fallen woman. Weiwuiying welcomes you to join us in Kaohsiung and witness this opera that celebrates feminine love and life itself.
