LIAO Chiung-chih The Living Human Treasures and NCO
Beginning her career in her twenties and now in her eighties, LIAO is finally ready to reveal an influential part of her life onstage. As the ups and downs of her life cannot be separated from her career as a Taiwanese opera singer it has taken her over sixty years to work up the courage to bare her soul to the public.
As a mother of four, LIAO once stated that she may not necessarily be a good mother but she is a responsible one. Not every woman entered motherhood fully prepared. To LIAO, this may be her original sin as a woman, the shadows of that night that even today she could never escape from.
The faint sound of gongs and drums seeped out of the darkness coalescing into a vision of Taiwanese opera which became the light that would guide her. With her small frame, she resolutely faced down the experiences that burnt her and devoted her life to the art of Taiwanese opera. She would go on to become a teacher who, in the eyes of her juniors and pupils, patiently guided them with soft words of encouragement.
It was Taiwanese opera that introduced her to the many flavors of life and it was from her sorrow in life that she developed a form of the performing art unique to her. She is LIAO Chiung-Chih, a living cultural treasure and the greatest Taiwanese opera Kudan.
