KUO Chih-yuan Memorial Concert
2021 marks a full century from the birth of composer KUO Chih-yuan (1921-2013). Born in Yuanli, a small town in Miaoli, while Taiwan was under Japanese rule, KUO began his musical education in Tokyo at the age of 14 and soon became an excellent harmonica player. He dreamed of becoming a musician, and was later accepted by the Tokyo College of Music in Japan, where he majored in musical composition. Upon returning to Taiwan after the Second World War, he buried himself in music writing. It was not until he was in his 40s that he decided to pursue three more years of training at the Nihon University College of Art in Japan. KUO's Symphonic Variations on a Taiwan Folk Tune, first given domestically as part of the program for the 1956 Taipei and Indianapolis USA Exchang Concert, was the first-ever western-style symphonic piece written by a Taiwanese. In 1973, KUO began his tenure as a researcher at the Taiwan Provincial Symphonic Orchestra (now National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra, NTSO), where he wrote many orchestral works inspired by Taiwanese culture until his retirement. Throughout his career, he was awarded the National Award for Arts, WU San-lien Arts Award, Executive Yuan National Cultural Award, and the Order of Brilliant Star with Grand Cordon. He also received an honorary doctoral degree from Providence University. KUO wrote more than 100 songs (including Red Rose (1953) and By Tamsui River (1997) ) in his life, and his songs became known for their delicately elegant melodies and rich local charm. His most representative orchestral works include Orchestra Suite Recollection (1961, 1973 finalized), Concertino for Piano and String Orchestra (1972), and the Symphonic Suite ŚĀSTĀ DEVAMANUSYĀNĀM (1988), among others.
