【Kaohsiung Local Hi】CHOU Shu-yi x CHEN Singing 2021 "Afterimage for Tomorrow" Special Edition for Weiwuying
"I was no longer the same person when I took off the VR headset. I watched CHOU Shu-Yi dance through the glass. I looked to the right, and I saw more of the right side of his face. I moved forward, and the distance between us narrowed. I moved backward, and he appeared to shrink. That VR experience of a moment ago completely changed me. The me that exists now has a renewed curiosity about 'using footsteps to change observation distances.'"——Excerpt from critic WEI Wan-Rong's review “This Time, VR Changed Me – Afterimage for Tomorrow: Weiwuying Special Performance Edition”
In 2018, film director Singing CHEN and choreographer CHOU Shu-Yi jointly produced the VR movie "Afterimage for Tomorrow." After premiering at the Kaohsiung Film Festival, it was shown at several other important domestic and international film festivals.
In 2019, CHOU and CHEN released a live theatrical performance version that explored how the virtual and the real and the various emotions in moving images can be extended. During the same year, they accepted an invitation from the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival, where they integrated VR into a live performance for the first time. The backdrop was a rebuilt space within an abandoned incineration plant.
In 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic wreaked havoc around the world, Weiwuying invited CHOU and CHEN to stage a site-specific performance in one of its non-theater spaces, of which Crown Hall, on the third floor, was chosen. The resulting creation was "Afterimage for Tomorrow – Weiwuying Special Performance Edition."
In the work, a man wakes in an uncertain dimension of consciousness. Are what he sees, hears, and feels his memories? Or are they a dreamland, virtual reality, or terminal lucidity? A voice says, "You are currently using the 'Living Memory Renewal Service.' You will be allowed to select three memories. When you are about to die, this service will stimulate your neurons to elicit the designated memories. The time you have to record the memories is the duration of a flame…" The memories perceived through the eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind are stored as words, images, sounds, moving images…. Memory fragments allow us to return to specific points in time, distorting and overlapping time and space. However, memories aren't always reliable.
In 2021, the world is still getting accustomed to the epidemic situation and everyone is looking for traces of ordinary memories in their daily lives in the search for balance. "Afterimage for Tomorrow – Weiwuying Special Performance Edition" (2021) is a 40-minute, site-specific creation that allows audiences to compare their own life experiences to the remnants of the afterimage landscape, bringing to them warmth.
