Taiwan Bangzi Opera Company - At Aranya Temple
Mirror/Encounter・Forbidden/Desire・Aranya Temple
In Aranya Temple, deep in the mountain woodlands, lives an evil tree spirit that has lived for thousands of years. Formless and bodiless, the spirit emits menacing chi, causing travelers that breathe it in to hallucinate. Such hallucinations reveal the heart's desire, which the evil tree spirit takes advantage of to delude the travelers, sucking away their vital essences so as to increase its own cultivation. Demon slayer YAN Chi-xia practiced Daoism since a young age; with a clean heart without any desires or wishes, he entered the temple with intent to slay evil spirits and demons. On the other hand, scholar NING Cai-chen had lost his way in the mountains, wandering into the temple and meeting NIE Xiao-qian, a spirit serving under the evil tree spirit. Having developed a fondness for NING Cai-chen, NIE Xiao-qian persuaded him to seek refuge with the demon slayer YAN Chi-xia, for if he could spend the night with YAN Chi-xia, he might be able to conceal himself from the clutches of the evil tree spirit, after which he could leave the temple as rapidly as possible at the following daybreak. That night, the menacing chi filled the temple. Although Xiao-qian was worried for Cai-chen, when Cai-chen breathed in the evil spirit's chi, his heart's desire was revealed to be YAN Chi-xia. Besides feeling crushed, she was also coerced by the tree spirit to shapeshift into YAN Chi-xia in order to seduce NING Cai-chen. Meanwhile, YAN Chi-xia had also breathed in the menacing chi, revealing his deepest secrets and stirring up his forbidden desire. YAN Chi-xia had been the hope of the two of them, yet he himself was now deeply at a loss…… Before daybreak, how can they free themselves, and escape from the haunting mists of desire?
