(Program cancelled) 【2022 Weiwuying Organ Festival】A Fantasy of Dance : Opening Concert
※The program has been cancelled. For more information, please contact +886-7-262-6666. |
A Fantasy of Dance : Opening Concert program will depart from the religious and solemn nature of stereotypical organ music and showcase the instrument's playful and fun side. The first part of the concert will be performed by Dutch organist Aart BERGWERFF of the Rotterdam Philharmonic and will consist of dance music pieces performed on pipe organ, including several famous tango pieces composed by Argentine composer Astor PIAZZOLLA, Tango, and a selection from The Firebird composed by Russian composer Igor STRAVINSKY, as well as Dutch composer Simeon TEN HOLT's most popular work Canto Ostinato.
Although improvisation was once considered a requirement among concertists, it is a quality scarcely found in today's classical music scene that seeks to remain faithful to original compositions and give accurate performances. Thankfully, this time-honored practice can still be found in organ music, in which in addition to the spontaneous performances still given in church services, organs also played the indispensable role of musical accompaniment in the silent film era. Therefore in the second half of the concert, the Weiwuying Concert Hall will transform into a movie theater as Dutch organist Hayo BOEREMA of the St. Lawrence Church in Rotterdam takes the audience on a journey back to the beginning of the 20 th century. With his improvised live performance accompanying the works of the master of silent films Charlie CHAPLIN, BOEREMA will guide the audience to feel the reality of the here and now and relive the glory of the silent era.

Artists Introduction
Aart BERGWERFF
Aart BERGWERFF is a driven and versatile musician. He likes exciting and adventurous concert
programming. On the one hand Aart has a great passion for the classical repertoire and on the other hand he likes to find new ways and forms in organ culture. Thus, he regularly co-operates with video artist Jaap DRUPSTEEN. Together with the Turkish derwish dancer Kadir SONUK he created the performance East meets West, to the music of Canto Ostinato by Simeon TEN HOLT. Another example is the production Mi Corazõn, in which organ and tango dance meet.
Aart is a teacher at the Rotterdams Conservatorium, part of Codarts Hogeschool voor de Kunsten. Aart BERGWERFF studied organ, choral conducting and church music at the Rotterdams Conservatorium. He continued his organ study in Paris with Marie-Claire ALAIN and in North Germany with Harald VOGEL. He concluded his study in Paris and obtained the Prix de Virtuosité. In 2003 he was awarded the silver medal of the Société Académique "Arts, Science et Lettres" because of his merits for the French organ culture.
Hayo BOEREMA
Fostering the organ to be introduced and appreciated by a wider audience, is what inspires Hayo BOEREMA as organist, lecturer and composer. In his musical interpretations, Hayo is always motivated to look for contrast and color in compositions of both established and contemporary composers to involve a traditional classical music audience as well as a more experimentally curious audience. Hayo's repertoire stretches a long time period. It includes SWEELINCK and BACH as well as more contemporary composers, with a particular interest for Olivier MESSIAEN and French organ music from the 20th century.
As a performer, Hayo often joins forces with choirs and orchestras. Additionally, he is regularly commissioned to compose. One of his major compositions, his Solemn Mass (Messe Solennelle), a composition for organ, choir, vocal soloist and percussion, was recorded recently and received with wide acclaim.
In addition to his performances, Hayo is professor of Organ at Codarts Conservatory at Rotterdam. He gives master classes in interpretation and improvisation internationally. Also, he is welcomed as a jury member at various international organ competitions.
