【Weiwuying Showtime】Traditional Storytelling Japanese Performance - Rakugo
Every couple of years, rakugo-themed television series, including the NHK morning drama series Warotenka, the anime/drama adaptation of the manga series Descending Stories: Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju, and the upcoming anime adaptation of the manga series My Master Has No Tail, are aired on Japanese TV, resulting in a spurt in popularity for rakugo clubs in schools. Rakugo is a traditional Japanese art similar to stand-up comedy. What makes rakugo unique is how it is performed without the performer standing up, how only a small cloth and paper fan are used as props, and how it requires the performer to play different characters. Rakugo performers have to study under a master for many years before they can make their official debut as a master of the art of combining comedy, storytelling, mime, solo performance, and object theater.
This year, following the well-received success of the public rakugo performance of Weiwuying Showtime in 2019, Weiwuying has arranged for another opportunity for the audience to enjoy an authentic rakugo performance from the Japanese performers. In this once-in-a-lifetime performance, three talented award-winning rakugo performers will show their skills and bring the audience an evening filled with laughter. Brush off the pandemic with this performance, forget everything troubling you, and let us welcome a better tomorrow.
