Jun MÄRKL, Paul HUANG & NSO
"Lush Playing."——San Francisco Classical Voice, 2018
"… vor allem bei Schostakowitsch' Symphonie Nr. 5 d-moll war das Ergebnis mitreißend: Es geriet eine Orchestermaschine ins Arbeiten, mit fliegenden Bögenund wuchtigem Wollen, deren Produkt auf (fast) ganzer Linie überzeugen konnte. Da brauchtes kein gut gemeintes westliches Wohlwollen: Das Orchester hat seinen Platz im Konzerthaus wohl verdient."——Kurier, 2017
When Scotland is mentioned, what comes to mind? Castles, highlands, whiskey, bagpipes? Let's enjoy the depictions of Scotland from NSO led by Music Director Jun MÄRKL and world-famous Taiwanese violinist Paul HUANG, presenting DEBUSSY's beautiful Marche écossaise sur un thème populaire, BRUCH's dreamy melancholy Scottish Fantasy, and MENDELSSOHN's abstract emotional Scottish. HUANG won the Lincoln Center Awards for Emerging Artists with his extraordinary expressivity. We look forward to his perfect interpretation of the violin solo in Scottish Fantasy, from the affecting melody of the beginning and liveliness of movements two and three, to the sonorous finale. Impressionist maestro DEBUSSY used Scottish folk tunes to capture the atmosphere of the vast northern landscapes, making listeners feel they are on the scene. While MENDELSSOHN did not directly quote Scottish folk song, the history of Scotland comes through, the remembrance of Mary, Queen of Scots, and the poetic landscape.
