【2022 Taiwan Dance Platform】Tso Hanchieh - Kid's Notes-My body, My partner
"The spacing between the crosswalk stripes is too large for me!" ─ Watch me hop
"The sink is too high for me to reach?" ─ I'll stand on my tiptoes
"This door is too heavy. I can't push it." ─ Let me exert my air punch
Observing the everyday movements of children in the urban setting, we are aware that they face multiple challenges in the process of growing up. While undergoing interesting trials and errors, children are also stimulated to be creative with their physicality. Nevertheless, how can adults acknowledge such needs and accompany them in their creative process?
Kid's Notes-My body, My partner is a project commissioned by the 2022 Taiwan Dance Platform, inviting TSO Han-chieh , the artistic director of Kaohsiung-based Double & Cross Theater Group, to lead a movement workshop for children between the ages of 6 and 12. Using her years of experience in baby theater and children's art as the foundation for this project.
A mother of two, artist Tso Han-chieh noticed that although the abundance of play facilities made of plastic and steel are of paramount safety, there is nothing interesting and stimulating for children's bodies. Limited passage space and the design of urban sidewalks has further confined the movements of children in the city corners. In the preschool education system, a large number of dance activities involve rigid copying of movements. Seeing that children are not allowed much room for creative development of their physicality, we launched a long-term creative project, inviting children to use their body as a vehicle to create in their living space, to guide them to respond to the social operational mechanism as well as their inner world.
In this art project, we will incorporate three concepts as our main execution components, including body measurement, sensory practice, and space & creation. We will start with physical measurement to understand the physiological aspects of the body as an everyday instrument. Then, we will move on to the discussion of the five senses. The operation of the nervous system is not only abstract, but also directly affects our inner emotions. We will explore the unique feelings of every child and construct the diversity and potential of their movement languages. In the last stage, we will carry out various exercises in different spaces, look for interesting elements that correspond to each environment, and gradually develop them into a simple sequence of body performance as a documentation of the creative practice.
