Kid Koala - The Storyville Mosquito
©YouTube(Place des Arts)
8 cameras, 75 puppets, 20 miniature sets, and live music create a hyper-surreal world that appeals to children and ignites hopes and dreams.
Canadian creative genius and DJ Kid Koala is the idol of scratch DJs all over the world. He uses an ultra-high degree of musicality to ingeniously piece musical phrase fragments and scratch sound effects together. He has toured with rock and hip-hop superstars, and has branched out into music production and film scoring. Kid Koala is also a skilled storyteller and graphic novelist. He adapted his original graphic novel Nufonia Must Fall into a multimedia musical theater production that received an enthusiastic response wherever it was performed and rave reviews from American newspaper "The New York Times" and British newspaper "The Guardian." Nufonia Must Fall was performed in Taiwan for the first time during the 2018 Taiwan International Festival of Arts. It gave audiences an unprecedented viewing experience.
This time, Kid Koala is bringing his newest masterpiece The Storyville Mosquito. It tells the amazing adventures of a young mosquito that leaves his small town for a big city to pursue his dream of playing in a legendary jazz band at the most prestigious music hall around, Sid Villa's Music Hall. His path, filled with trouble and misfortune, appears to be full of twists and turns, but he meets likeminded people on the bustling streets and forms treasured and sincere friendships.
The Storyville Mosquito is a multisensory feast that is simultaneously a play, a film, and a concert. The superb skills of the puppeteers are projected by cameras in real time and paired with live music performances of various styles, giving life to the puppets and transmitting their vitality to audiences. It's an endearing, Chaplin-esque silent humor theater experience that's fun for the entire family.
This original work offers a fresh take on "love, music, and dreams." A mosquito understands the solitude of wandering around urban jungles. Let's find out our dreams in the theatre!
