Hung Dance - Birdy
Contemporary dance transcends modern constraints and liberties – a Taiwanese creation so compelling, French audiences queue for standby tickets every day.
Reinterpreting Western myths and Eastern traditional opera, this dance, akin to poetry, charts the soaring journey of individuals and nations.
"Is every free flight born from a restriction?"
Birdy uses dance as a brush, offering a flowing and a poetically-profound answer to this question. In the summer of 2023, the performance graced the stage at one of the world's three major arts festivals, the Festival Off Avignon in France. It sold out for all 20 shows; even 40-degree heatwaves couldn't deter audiences from queuing for standby tickets.
Choreographer LAI Hung-chung first introduced the duet version of Birdy to international choreography competitions in 2017. It garnered multiple awards and embarked on an international tour, embodying an unapologetic desire for flight, unburdened by constraints.
Years later, Birdy evolved into an octet production, circling the globe. As it gazes back at those who persistently navigate the unsteady skies of life and nation, LAI reevaluates the concept of "restriction." He combs through elements of Western mythology and Eastern tradition, turning them over and melding them together. The traditional headdress symbolising authority, the "Lingzi," is used with graceful agility, akin to a brush and as sharp as a knife. It is no longer reserved solely for those of high stature. The "vine pole" is a spear without a head, constructing a floating cage and constraint.
Contemporary dance confronts contemporary issues, witnessing how, in times of turbulence, wings scatter into feathers, and feathers gather into wings, flying toward the heart's true direction.

Since its inception, the company has been tirelessly creating and striving to convey Taiwanese art through international tours. It is also committed to fostering international connections for young creative talents.
