VMTheatre Company - Don't Cry, Dancing Girls the Musical
►[ House Program ] VMTheatre Company - Don_t Cry, Dancing Girls the Musical
The most trending musical in 2023! Tickets were sold out within seconds! More than a year of preparation, Don't Cry, Dancing Girls will be in the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying) in August 2024!
When three sisters returned after many years to their old family home in Huwei, Yunlin, they found that their uncle, aunt, third great-uncle, and second great-aunt had hardly aged a day; only the passage of time had left its mark on the derelict house. The sisters, initially falling over each other to waive their right to inheritance, in an unexpected series of events were drawn into their second great-uncle's dying wish—the Song family member that performs in the soul-guiding song troupe may receive the family's five million inheritance. The three sisters took on the challenge; with the aim of splitting the inheritance, they started from scratch and restrained themselves in the art of the soul-guiding song. As they searched through the small town, they unexpectedly evoked memories of their long-lost father—a gambler and Taoist priest, and their mother, a professional mourner, and the estranged family ties, at long last, emerged one after another.
Prominent director TSENG Hui-cheng, emerging composer Robert KANG, and Golden Bell-winning screenwriter ZHAN Jie collaborate on the unorthodox new musical Don't Cry, Dancing Girls, a love letter to their homeland and its people.
About the show
An original Chinese-language musical, Don't Cry, Dancing Girls relates a story of a typical family returning from the city to their rural Yunlin county roots, occasioned by the family patriarch's death. It involves typical traditional elements of ritual, derived from Daoist, Buddhist, ancient Chinese magicism, and ancestor worship. The play treats audiences to high-quality acting, vocal, and dance performances steeped in Taiwanese identity.
Audiences enjoy an authentic identification with an ordinary family in a traditional small neighborhood. The performance evokes the losses associated with social transformation toward urbanism and modernity.
To die is not to vanish, but to transform into another mode of existence. Reminiscent of the celebrated film Coco, which opens with immersion in the Mexican Day of the Dead, this work launches a universal exploration of life's experience and its inseparability from family relationships.
Love is always present. We just love each other in our own way. For example, "The Judge" unfolds a reconciliation between daughter and father, rendering palpable the blurry lines between love and hate residing in family relationships.
