Three choreographers with distinct styles, Anita CHEN, YEN Su-hao, Benson TSAI, have been invited to collaborate and take on the challenge of this classic work. Team Introduction
Taipei Capital Ballet is a nurturing force in Taiwan's dance community. Based in Taipei, the company creates ballet with a distinctly Taiwanese flavor, showcasing local characteristics. Yu-Ling CHAO, a professor at the College of Performing Arts from the National Taiwan University of Arts, commented, "Taipei Capital Ballet combines the refined elegance and sophistication of art with a unique blend of social criticism and humanistic care. The company not only provides a platform for Taiwanese dancers to perform and create but also strives to bridge the gap between the art of ballet and the general public. They challenge the common perception of ballet as otherworldly, rigid, and only performing foreign classics. Instead, they showcase that ballet is not only an exhibition of dancers’ artistry and skills but also a medium for choreographers to express their creativity. The ballet dancers, with their unique grace and resilient perseverance, continue to dance with unwavering dedication."
As the saying goes, "The beginning is always the hardest." When the company was first founded in March 1990, creating new works was its primary goal. To maintain performance quality, the company initially operated as a professional ballet company, working five days a week (Monday to Friday, with dance practices starting at 10:30 AM and rehearsals from 2:00 to 5:00 PM) for six years. Later, due to financial constraints and the challenge of finding skilled dancers, the work time was reduced to three days a week. Yet, the company still maintained year-round practices and continued its long-term training of dedicated dancers.
★ In 2020, the company received the 24th Taipei Culture Award, becoming the first ballet company in Taipei to receive this honor. ★
★ In 2009, the company won the 7th Taishin Arts Award Grand Prize. ★
★ Since 2008, the company has been selected as a Taiwan Top Performing Arts Group by the National Culture and Arts Foundation. ★
The company's "National Tour of New Pieces," which takes place at least once a year, is a long-standing commitment. To date, the company has produced over 80 pieces and performed nearly one thousand performances. Using ballet as a foundation, the company explores and develops various styles. The pieces which incorporate ballet and Taiwan's indigenous dance are particularly praised and admired. The company's first performance abroad was in March 1999. New York Times chief dance critic Anna Kisselgoff praised the performance as a romantic legend from Taiwan, illustrating a full range of Taiwanese imagery. Additionally, in 2008, the London-published international dance magazine "Dance Europe" praised Taipei Capital Ballet for its innovative spirit and novel works. By combining homegrown forms of dance, local metaphors, and contemporary themes, Taipei Capital Ballet is creating ballet that Taiwan can truly call its own.
To maintain creative vitality and diversity, the company also invites choreographers from different fields to collaborate, ensuring that Taipei Capital Ballet remains an integral part of Taiwan's ongoing dance development.
