School of Dance, Taipei National University of the Arts. Pina Bausch's "The Rite of Spring" : A Classic Restaged
If we are to name the top 10 most influential performances in 20th-century, Pina Bausch's 'Rite of Spring' undoubtedly would be on this list. It resonates with the first Rite of Spring choreographed by Vaslav Nijinsky in 1913, but also foreshadows the distinctive Tanztheater style for which Bausch became renowned.
Pina Bausch's distinctive approach to theater, focusing on intense physical and emotional expression through repetitive movements, has left a lasting impact on dance and theater worldwide. Her works explore themes like individual versus collective identity, gender dynamics, societal norms, etc.
In fall 2024 the Dance School of the Taipei National University of the Arts will restage The Rite of Spring, the first Asian reconstruction authorized by the Pina Bausch Foundation. TNUA alumna Yu Tsai-Chin and four other senior dancers from Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch will lead the restaging. The TNUA Rite of Spring marks the culmination of collaborations between Taiwan's higher education in dance and top end professional dance companies in the world.

Artists Introduction
Pina Bausch
Pina Bausch was born 1940 in Solingen and died 2009 in Wuppertal. She received her dance training at the Folkwang School in Essen under Kurt Jooss, where she achieved technical excellence. After two years in New York, initially with a scholarship for the renowned Juilliard School of Music, then as a dancer at the New American Ballet and at the Metropolitan Opera House Ballet, she returned to Essen in 1962 on Jooss' request as a soloist at the newly founded Folkwang Dance Studio. Soon after the director of Wuppertal's theatres, Arno Wüstenhöfer, engaged her as choreographer, from autumn 1973, she renamed the ensemble the Tanztheater Wuppertal. Under this name, although controversial at the beginning, the company gradually achieved international recognition. Its combination of poetic and everyday elements influenced the international development of dance. Awarded some of the greatest prizes and honours world-wide, Pina Bausch is one of the most significant choreographers of our time.
