2025【Explore the Pipe Organ】February- June
Besides the breathtaking vineyard-style seating and outstanding acoustics at the Weiwuying Concert Hall, the pipe organ, located on the top floor, is another major highlight. If you're wondering what this largest organ in Asia can do, our Explore the Pipe Organ series of events is just what you're looking for!
Performances will be enhanced with other instruments, special lighting effects, and informative explanations, which will make the organ's diversity and charm more accessible and understandable to the audience.
In addition, the programs boast two unique features: The first is that they will be Close-up Shows—the stage will be transformed into a seating area to give the audience an even closer experience with the organ. The second is the Musical Chairs aspect: members of the audience will be permitted to get up and move to other seats between pieces of music to try out different perspectives and get an idea of which seats they would like to reserve for future performances.
So for an hour each month, come to our Explore the Pipe Organ events to see all the secrets behind this fascinating instrument!
Programs
2/12(Wed)14:30-15:30 【Hymn to Love】 ※Close-up Show
February is the month of love, and Weiwuying is going to sing out hymns to this sentiment on the organ! Audiences will hear an unwavering vow in E. Piaf’s Hymne à l'amour, which was performed as the final act for the opening of the 2024 Paris Olympics. P. I. TCHAIKOVSKY’s “Waltz” from the ballet The Sleeping Beauty and L. VIERNE’s Carillon de Westminster perfectly convey the deep emotion and joy of walking down the wedding aisle. Also on the agenda are J. STRAUSS Sr.’s Radetzky March and one of J.S. BACH’s most famous organ solo pieces, Toccata and Fugue in d minor. This powerful display of music is a veritable echo of a verse in Hymne à l'amour: “The blue sky over us can collapse and the earth can very well cave in; I don’t care, if you love me .”
3/19(Wed)14:30-15:30 【Spring Pipe Organ Party】
In the warmth of early spring in March, come to Weiwuying for a pipe organ party! This month, we’ll hear some of the most popular classical music pieces, from the resplendent Triumphal March from G. VERDI’s Aida to E. GRIEG’s wild dance of demonic creatures “In the Hall of the Mountain King” from Peer Gynt, and from the angelic Amazing Grace to organist's arrangement of It's a small world and When you wish a star . In addition, there will be select movements from C. SAINT-SAËNS’ The Carnival of the Animals, and what’s more, the organ is going to put on its “full orchestra” hat, accompanying a piano in performing W. A. MOZART’s serene, lovely Andante from Piano Concerto in C Major, No. 21, laying out a veritable musical feast for the party.
4/23(Wed)14:30-15:30 【Fantasy Music Journey with the Organ】
With Children’s Day falling on April 4, this month is all about kids! Come celebrate with Weiwuying’s organ, because everything on the playlist, whether they be such great classics as P. I. TCHAIKOVSKY’s The Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker Suite, J. S. BACH’s “Arioso” from Cantata no. 156, and R. HAHN’s À Chloris; famous organists L. VIERNE’s, C. M. WIDOR’s, and John INNES’ brilliant compositions; or contemporary legendary pieces by jazz pianist Joe UTTERBACK and film score master E. MORRICONE, all exhibit that rarely seen gentle side of the organ, making this fantasy-like concert perfect for families!
5/14(Wed)14:30-15:30 【Enigma of Love】 ※Musical Chairs
All forms of art are an expression of love. In music, a composer's intended recipient is sometimes a clearly identified person or the audience, while at other times it is hidden deep within the composer’s heart, known to no one. The middle song in this month’s music is from British composer E. ELGAR’s Enigma Variations, full of a loving sense of gratitude toward friends and family for years of support. The same composer’s Salut d'Amour is, on the other hand, a token of love dedicated to his fiancée. In comparison with ELGAR’s clearly stated intentions, S. RACHMANINOFF’s Vocalise has no lyrics and instead suggests intimate feelings purely through sound. We’ll also hear J.S. BACH’s and L. JANÁČEK’s musical descriptions of divine love and J. BRAHMS’ portrayal of the love of an entire ethnic group in Hungarian Dance No. 5. No matter how one goes about it, people love music, just as Elvis PRESLEY sang: “I can’t help falling in love with you!”
6/18(Wed)14:30-15:30 【From Bach to Broadway】 ※Musical Chairs
The organ and cello are teaming up for this selection of pieces ranging from J.S. BACH to Broadway hits. It starts with the elegance and complexity of BACH’s and G. F. HANDEL’s Baroque masterpieces. A piece by French composer G. BIZET from Farandole and another by Spanish cellist G. CASSADÓ, Toccata in the Style of Frescobaldi, are full of the vibrant passion of their respective cultures, corresponding well to Canadian folk poet L. COHEN’s Hallelujah. To close, famous pieces from two musicals, Chess and The Phantom of the Opera, will carry the audience across the globe to New York’s dazzling Broadway stage! |
