[2026 Weiwuying International Music Festival] Weiwuying Contemporary Music Ensemble - Musical Puzzles and Games
The concert opens with Serbian composer Marko NIKODIJEVIĆ's music box / selbstportrait mit ligeti und strawinsky (und messiaen ist auch dabei). The piece masterfully blends the iconic musical languages of these three 20th-century masters, including micropolyphony, extended techniques, masterful orchestration, high-tension rhythmic language, and melodies with unique modal colors.
Next is Talea for ensemble by French spectral music pioneer Gérard GRISEY. The composer creates two distinct "musical gestures" from a single fundamental pitch's overtone series: one fast, loud, and ascending, the other slow, soft, and descending. Composed in two continuous sections, the piece cleverly juxtaposes machine-like precision with organic, unpredictable elements, exploring the dramatic potential of rupture without abandoning GRISEY's core principles of continuity.
German composer Johannes SCHÖLLHORN's Anamorphoses pour ensemble replaces fragments of BACH's The Art of Fugue with Francis PONGE's absurd text L'art de la figue. With exquisite craftsmanship, the piece is entirely unpretentious while exuding a cheerful, iconoclastic spirit.
The concert concludes with Le réseau des reprises by this year's composer-in-residence, Dieter AMMANN. This work explores the phenomena of repetition and variation on different levels, applying the principle of "extended reprise" to the overall structure. It's a forward-moving piece that creates both climactic and tranquil passages, showcasing a unique aesthetic of "repetition."
