[2026 Taiwan Dance Platform] Shimmering Production Beings by WANG Yeu-kwn
The plasticity and musicality of the action are very concentrated, in the tradition of oriental poetry, like Haiku, in which the complex is compressed and synthesized, current and eternal, in the delicacy of the simple, the minimal.—— Erregueté: Revista Galega de Teatro, Afonso Becerra |
"One eye looks inward, the other toward the world. In this wordless dialogue, how honest can human relationships be?"
Young bodies carry eagerness for beginnings and fear of loss. On a vast sheet of rice paper, every shift of weight, pull, and friction between the two dancers tests physical limits and the dynamics of connection. Ink stains and creases become irreversible traces of their interactions.
Beings explores the formation, dependence, and dissolution of human relationships through contact improvisation and Eastern materials. Inspired by the Chinese character for "human" (人), which emerges from one stroke supporting another, the dancers' explosive, probing bodies embody the tension of mutual reliance, always on the edge of imbalance.
Beings has been in development for seven years, touring internationally to venues in Japan, Greece, Germany, Spain, Portugal, and France's Théâtre national de Chaillot. The work has received three awards at the Yokohama Dance Collection and was a finalist for the Rose International Dance Prize at Sadler's Wells Theatre in the UK.
After years of international touring and critical recognition, this meticulously crafted work will premiere its full theatrical version in southern Taiwan. In a 50-minute, minimalist duet, it vividly portrays the collective anxieties of contemporary society—the desire for intimacy and the fear of loss. Through the continuous narrative of two dancers and a single sheet of paper, the audience is invited to experience a relationship's journey from birth, collapse, and eventual renewal.
