Dr. Elizabeth DALMAN's Dance Connections between Taiwan and Australia
Dr. Elizabeth Cameron DALMAN will give an outline of her long, varied and fruitful association with the dance community of Taiwan. This relationship began back in 1971 when she performed in Taipei with the company she founded in 1965, Australian Dance Theatre, which was touring to India and South East Asia. Her meeting with Madame TSAI Jui-yueh at that time led to ongoing connections across the decades with Taiwan's dance community. From the beginning of this century Dr Dalman's relationship with this community has expanded across the sector to include professional dance artists, various companies and training institutions, while she also has maintained her close contact with the Tsai Jui-yueh Dance Research Institute.
Fascinated by the parallel colonial histories of Taiwan and Australia and her passion for working in inter-cultural collaborations, Elizabeth will give an outline of her long history in this area emphasising the importance of the Arts, and dance in particular, to society and global cohesion. She will also discuss the importance of archiving and sharing dance histories in forums such as the Dance Memory Map, and in finding the connecting links between different countries.
The collaboration between Mirramu Dance Company (Australia) and Dancecology (Taiwan) over the last nearly 20 years is an exciting outcome of a long creatively focused inter-cultural mentorship. It is sustained and maintained by both Dr. Dalman's and Peng, Hsiao-yin's deep connection to and inspiration from the natural world. Their dance creations in both theatre and outdoor contexts aim to draw attention to humanity's reciprocal relationship with nature. This inter-generational, intercultural and mutually rewarding work is reflected in their continuing questioning of the human relationship and responsibility to the natural world in their work.

Elizabeth is an Australian Dance Elder with a professional career spanning more than 60 years. She founded Australian Dance Theatre in 1965 and was its Artistic Director for 10 years. She is currently Director of Mirramu Creative Arts Centre and Artistic Director of Mirramu Dance Company. She continues her dance research and writing, dance teaching, directing and performance practice.
Elizabeth has performed and taught throughout Australia, New Zealand, Europe, the UK, the US, Africa and South East Asia, particularly in Taiwan. Elizabeth's first visit to Taiwan was in 1971. She has kept up her connections with the dance community there ever since.
In 2025 Elizabeth was awarded an AM for her significant contribution to contemporary dance in Australia. In 2015 she was inducted into the Hall of Fame at the Australian Dance Awards and in 2023 she was awarded the medal of Chevalière de L'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the French Ministry of Culture in Paris.

PENG Hsiao-yin (Grace) is the Artistic Director of Dancecology and founder of Dancescreen Collective Taiwan. She is a choreographer, dance-film director, and dance teacher. Peng received a B.A. in Agronomy and M.F.A. in Choreography. Her practice focuses on the connection between nature's ecosystem and dancers' movements. She enjoys developing interdisciplinary and intergenerational works, teaching and dancing with different people. She won the 2017 1-min dance-film competition of Jumping Frames International Dance Video Festival. With her company Dancecology she has been touring internationally with performances and film screenings in Taiwan, Australia, Italy, Portugal, Malaysia, Nepal, Norway, USA, China, Netherlands and Mexico. Grace has worked with Dr Elizabeth Cameron Dalman since 2006. At that time Elizabeth gave her two seeds — Dance and Ecology — which changed her life forever and guided her creative practice to where it is today. Since 2012, Dancecology has visited Dr Dalman and Mirramu annually.
