How Ngean LIM(Initiator and Founder for Asian Dramaturgs' Network, ADN), initiator and founder of the Asian Dramaturgs' Network (ADN, established 2016) will share a report of observations and findings through previous symposiums and meetings held by the Network. He will guide participants through practices to discover the role of 'dramaturg', also share his experiences dramaturging for regional choreographers such as Pichet Klunchun (Thailand) and Eko Supriyanto (Indonesia).
Dance Dramaturg/Lecturer:|How Ngean LIM(Initiator and Founder for Asian Dramaturgs' Network, ADN)
Malaysian-born (now Australia-based) How Ngean is an independent dance dramaturg, producer and performance-maker for more than 20 years. He has dramaturged for the Singapore Arts Festival and Singapore's Esplanade Theatres on the Bay, with choreographers Daniel Kok, Joavien Ng, Kuik Swee Boon and Ming Poon from Singapore, and Pichet Klunchun from Thailand. |
In 2016, How Ngean founded Asian Dramaturgs'Network (ADN), a critical exchange platform on dramaturgy among Asian dramaturgs and performance-makers, with four successful symposiums in Singapore (2016), TPAM Yokohama (2017), OzAsia, Adelaide (2017 and TPAM Yokohama (2018). ADN has presented speakers from Malaysia, Singapore, India, Indonesia, China, Japan, Thailand, Korea, Hong Kong and Australia. In 2017, he curated the 'Body Archives' programme for Dancehouse Melbourne for the Asia-Pacific Trienniel of Performing Arts (AsiaTOPA) in Melbourne.

The Asia Network for Dance (AND+) is a new network launched in Hong Kong in May 2018. Initiated by the West Kowloon Cultural District, the core members include National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying), Singapore Esplanade Theatres on the Bay, Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan and a group of dance passionate makers from Singapore, Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia, India, Japan, China and more. The Network brings together dance practitioners from the Asia region for sharing, exchange and collaboration. In this talk, speakers will share their experience of the formation of the network, vision and mission, as well as the insights from the core members of AND+ sharing about talented dancemakers from the Southeast Asia.
Speakers|Anna Chan
Anna CY Chan was the Head of Dance, Performing Arts of the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority from 2014-2018 and from September 2018, she serves as Dance Advisor. In her tenure as Head of Dance, she was responsible for shaping the district’s artistic direction and strategies for dance. |
Under her leadership, a series of New Works Forum programmes have been launched and co-presented, including “Dance Dialogue with Wayne McGregor”, “Screendance”, “Writing Choreographic Process”, “Multimedia and Dance Dialogue”, “Dance in Alternative Space” and “Dance Dramaturgy”, etc. These programmes explore innovative forms of creating and performing, and new ways of discussing and thinking about topics related to contemporary performances. She also co-curated WKCDA annual Producer Network Meeting & Forum and as chief producer for ON VIEW: HONG KONG and Look Two Ways dance productions.
In 2007, Anna became the Vice-President (East Asia) of the World Dance Alliance Asia Pacific. She was also the Chairperson of the Hong Kong Dance Alliance from 2006 to 2011 and has been the Dance Advisor of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council since 2008. She was awarded Hong Kong Dance Award in 2004, City Contemporary Dance Laureate in 2016 and the prestigious Hong Kong Dance Award for Distinguished Achievement in recognition of her significant contribution to Dance in 2018. She also serves on the American Dance Abroad inaugural advisory council, the jury member of 2018 Keir Choreographic Award in Australia and 2017 Seoul International Choreography Festival. She is now the Dean of School of Dance at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.

Jala Adolphus is an independent producer and editor in the field of contemporary dance. She produces for a selection of leading Indonesian choreographers and directors that work across the mediums of stage and film including Eko Supriyanto, Garin Nugroho and Rianto. |
As Editor (2014 - 2017) for Tanzconnexions, the Goethe Institut platform for contemporary dance in the Asia Pacific, she is engaged with the discourse, practitioners and events that connect artists, academics, audiences and programs both within Southeast Asia and the Pacific and between Europe. In 2013 Jala worked within the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy for the Indonesia Performing Arts Market, IPAM 2013 and has since worked on Indonesian programming with Australian and European international festivals and organisations.
A member of the Asian Producers Platform and core working member of the Asian Network For Dance, Jala is dedicated to supporting the voice of Indonesia’s leading contemporary performing artists, working on the supporting structure for the development and international touring of their work.

Based on the inspirations about artists' personal journey in dance, we invite the artists to meet audience and demonstrate their exceptional dance vocabulary within personal stories to illustrate the diversity and the inclusiveness of dance in contemporary times. With Rianto from his traditional Javanese dance to contemporary body; with Ryuichi Fujimura from non-professionally trained to contemporary dance and choreography; with Baru Madiljin from his Paiwan indigenous traditions to transformation and the innovative shape of tribal impulse.
Artists|Rianto
Born in 1981 in Kaliori Village, Banyumas, Rianto has been trained in classical Javanese dance and Javanese folk dance from a young age, specializing in the cross-gender form of Lengger. As a graduate from ISI Solo, the leading Indonesian Institute for Performing Arts, Rianto has been based in Tokyo, Japan since 2003, where he founded the classical Javanese dance company, Dewandaru Dance Company. He has worked with a spectrum of international choreographers, performance makers, and companies whilst remaining dedicated to his training and own voice for contemporary Javanese performing arts. |
Since 2017 Rianto has joined Akram Khan Company, taking over Akram’s role in Until The Lions. He continues to tour along with SoftMachine, a solo work under the direction of Choy Ka Fai. Further projects include the work with Korean choreographer Sen Hea Ha performed in Seoul, Singapore, Belgium, Netherlands, and Austria, Chen Shi Zheng's opera at Shubert Theatre (Boston) and the London Coliseum with the English National Opera, serving as guest artist for Gulliver & Swift and Garibaba’s Stange World by Japanese dance theatre company Pappa TARAHUMARA, the 24-hour solo work in celebration of International Dance Day, collaborations with Keiko Nakano on Yumme for Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre, the Dance Opera Gandari by Tony Prabowo, and To Belong choreographed by Akiko Kitamura.
Artist residencies include deSingel (Antwerp), Staatstheater Darmstadt, Nottle Theatre Company (Korea), Attakkalari India Biennial, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (Singapore), and most recently, Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Arts (Honolulu). In 2007, Rianto received an ANA grant to present his own choreographic works in Indonesia, Taiwan, Malaysia, India, and Japan.
Artists|Ryuichi Fujimura
Sydney-based dance artist originally from Japan. Since the mid-1990s, he has studied contemporary dance technique as well as improvisation and choreography in Australia and overseas. Over the last fifteen years, Ryuichi has collaborated with both emerging and established international and Australian artists/companies including Xavier le Roy, La Fura dels Baus, Force Majeure, De Quincey Co., Opera Australia, and Kate Sherman. |
Artists|Baru Madiljin
Baru Madiljin graduated from the School of Dance of Taipei National University of the Arts. Though had lived in urban communities for ten years, Baru Madiljin did not lose the nutrients he once acquired from his mother land; he communicates his inner self to the public with his body, providing a dialogue between traditional and modern concepts through body language. |
He was praised by the British Internet magazine Spiked with “the choreography was strong…” while Kelly Apter from The Scotsman newspaper described his work as “Deeply touching… The passion is palpable.”
In 2009, Baru Madiljin returned to his hometown, Sandimen in Pingtung, to join his sister in the work of passing on the indigenous culture and arts. He became the Choreographer and Dance Director of Tjimur Dance Theatre.
