The Introduction of the Ducumentaries
Eötvös 75
On January 2, 2019 Péter Eötvös celebrated his 75th birthday. In connection with the anniversary, András Surányi made a portrait film about the composer, although it is not easy to determine the genre of the film. As it is a non-traditional portrait, we do not know from the film Eötvös's entire career from early theater and film music, experimental work to Stockhausen and Boulez to the era of large operas and orchestral compositions. It records where this fascinating career as a composer and conductor is in 2019, and what issues and tasks excite Eötvös at this point in his life. The film features music colleagues (among others Isabelle Faust, György Kurtág Jr. and Miklós Lukács), and of course Péter Eötvös himself tells the story. We could say that we could gain insight into the composer's "witch kitchen" if the film did not make it clear that Eötvös does not consider himself a witch-able wizard (of course, he knows the nature of witchcraft, it turns out). Eötvös's thinking is much more like that of a natural scientist: he is primarily interested in sound relations, formal proportions, and structural issues. Whatever the cathartic emotional impact of his works, his creator is in fact an extraordinarily deep, precise, and infinitely devoted, extraordinary intellect.
The SEVENTH DOOR
The SEVENTH DOOR draws a portrait of composer Péter Eötvös, a prominent champion and exponent of modern music. Using new footage, archival films and photos, Judit Kele provides an iaginative insight into the world of this tireless musician and complex personality whose desire is to "make what is heard visible". This documentary also includes interviews with Pierre Boulez and Kariheinz Stockhausen and shows precious footage of Péter Eötvös rehearsing his opera ”Three Sisters”
Prix SACEM du Meilleur Documentaire Musical de Création, 1999/ Festival international des films sur l'art: Patt & Whitney Canada Grand Prize, 2000/ Mention Spécial du jury-Festival Classique en image, 2000.
