FourFun Theatre - Broken Doll the Musical
"This performance isn't trying to get people's pity for such a family. Instead, it cruelly yet loyally presents its struggle." ——Drama A Capella's artistic director KAO Chu-lan in Performing Arts Reviews
"What's precious about this performance , in addition to its illustration of the family's hardship, is its emphasis of the 'ecstasy'. Judgements from other will continue, and accidents won't just transform into miracles, but nice things keep happening as well." ——Project-based reviewer Anniel HAO from Performing Arts Reviews
"In addition to discrimination and inconvenience, the story also depicts other family members and their spiritual aspect. In addition to telling a story of rare disease, in puts even more emphasis on love and family."——News editor ZHANG Luo-shao in Performing Arts Reviews
"This is a work in which actors sing against illness and death, and the audience respond with tears. The performance uses animation and illustrations to depict life and death, and it takes the audience through emotional upheavals, in which they're never 'poker-faced'."——Freelance writer Venus SUN from Performing Arts Reviews
After the performances at the 2016 Weiwuying Children's Festival, the Quanta Arts Foundation and the Wellspring Theater in Taipei, gratified by the heartfelt feedbacks from those audiences, the Four Fun Theatre once again brings Broken Doll the Musical back to Weiwuying, National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts, where the musical was first conceived. Broken Doll the Musical refers to a real disease called Moebius syndrome. People with the disease are unable to control their facial muscles. They cannot cry, laugh or express any emotions in the face; they even have trouble speaking or blinking. Right now, we all must wear masks, so it is hard for us to tell from other people's silence whether they are hesitant to speak or simply fed up. However, such confusions take place in the entire life of patients with Moebius syndrome, in ways we cannot imagine.
Broken Doll the Musical is based on a true story of a Moebius syndrome patient and his family. The show was well received after its debut at the 2016 Weiwuying Children's Festival. We hope to see more people get to know this brave and optimistic family.
"If everyone could choose the family they were born into, what kind of family would you want?"
"What if it weren't how you'd imagined it to be? What would you do?"
The playwright starts the show with these two simple questions. Oh, how life is full of twists and turns. A boy wants nothing more than an ordinary, happy life with his family, but he was born with a neurological disorder called "Moebius Syndrome". Due to this incurable disease, the whole family's life revolves around him. His mother's self-blame, his sister's grievance and his father's desperation eventually overwhelm the boy. "I suppose your life would be easier without me, right?" Just when the boy decides to leave in despair, a mysterious young man shows up in front of him...
