Our Theatre ft. YEUNG Fai - The Prawning Decameron
In 1348, a tragic plague suddenly ravaged the prosperous Florence, resulting in more than ten thousand deaths. People who died were as high as ten million across Europe back then. The next year, BROCCACCIO's The Decameron was written with the Black Death as the background, telling the story of seven women and three men who ran to the mountains, settling down in a beautiful garden to escape the plague. Facing the disaster, all they wanted was some peaceful time. One hundred happy, humorous adventure stories, erotic jokes, and more were told in ten days.
When COVID-19 spreads around the world, the high-speed society has no choice but to pause. Now, we present to you a modern version of The Decameron that belongs to the Taiwanese—The Prawning Decameron. It portrays that in the gloomy life haunted by the plague, a bunch of people are goofing around for ten days in a prawn-fishing farm in rural Chiayi, trying to have fun by telling lust stories that no one can tell if they were true or not.
The artistic director of Our Theatre, WANG Jhao-cian, and puppet master, YEUNG Fai, co-direct this work. The performance also features a star studded cast of Taiwanese glove puppetry, exploring the changes brought forth by the pandemic. Following the narrative structure of the earth-shattering Decameron, the performance assembles dramas, puppet shows, and interactive projections, illustrating the absurdity of humanity that is revealed in midst of the pandemic.

Team Introduction
Our Theatre
Our Theatre is the first performing arts group for contemporary theatre to be officially established in the greater Chiayi area. It intentionally distances itself from the metropolitan areas and chooses Chiayi as its base. The troupe focuses on folk culture and common people and is devoted to developing productions from a southern point of view and experimenting with a new generation of Taiwanese-language works. It strives to set a new direction for the development of art and culture in Chiayi. At the same time, it is constantly aware of the question of how theatre should connect with people and society.
Producer, Director|WANG Jhao-cian
The founder and artistic director of Our Theatre. He also founded an experimental theater in Chiayi City in 2018. Artist-in-residence at the NTCH 2021-2022. With the encouragement of his mentor, he returned to his hometown and founded Our Theatre after graduating from NTUA.
Director, Leading Role|YEUNG Fai
Born into a well-known glove puppetry family in Zhangzhou, Fujian Province, China in 1964, YEUNG Fai had toured stages across the globe with nothing but his puppets since the late 1980s and up until 2001, when he settled down in France. YEUNG's paths spanned all five major continents of the world. In addition to performances, he is also a dedicated educator and promoter of traditional glove puppetry art. He holds a teaching position at the renowned École Nationale Supérieure des Arts de La Marionnette in France, and he regularly gives master classes in Germany, Spain, Russia, Italy, Poland, Brazil, Israel, and Australia.
