Kyogen with Mansai NOMURA
As one of Japan's 4 major classical theatres, Kyogen serves as a vital foundation for traditional and contemporary performing arts in Japan and is recognized as an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO. Characterized by its humorous dialogues, everyday themes, and slightly satirical, exaggerated physical performances, Kyogen's close connection to the general public has solidified its place as one of the most popular traditional performing arts.
Master Mansai NOMURA and his team return to Taiwan for an exclusive show at the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying) with both classic and new works. The classic Busu cleverly portrays the witty exchange between a stern master and his mischievous servant, evoking hearty laughter.
The new Ayu tells the tale of Saisuke the fisherman, who is gifted with the ability to predict the future through facial expressions, and Kokichi, a young man fleeing his homeland. It ingeniously employs the unique stage vocabulary to open up a new world of Kyogen performance. This piece was commissioned by Japan's National Noh Theatre in 2017 and is making its international debut on this tour.

THE MANSAKU-NO-KAI KYOGEN COMPANY
The Mansaku-no-Kai Kyogen Company was founded by Mansaku NOMURA II, and is now led by Mansaku and his son, Mansai II, member of a distinguished familial theatrical line that boasts a 250-year-history. Since the company's first tour abroad to the Paris International Theater Festival in 1957, Mansaku has been a pioneer in sharing the art of kyogen with international audiences, giving performances and lectures throughout the world. Continuing his father's mission, Mansai performs kyogen extensively, and is committed to exploring the possibilities of kyogen as a contemporary of Japan as a Living National Treasure. Mansai NOMURA and Yukio ISHIDA, have been designated as holders of Important Intangible Cultural Property.
Mansai NOMURA
Mansai NOMURA was born in 1966 and studied under his father Mansaku II and his late grandfather Manzo VI (both Living National Treasures). He made his stage debut at the age of three.
His acclaimed performances go far beyond those of traditional kyogen and noh actors – he also played the title roles of Oedipus, directed by Yukio NINAGAWA, and Hamlet, directed by Jonathan KENT. He has starred in hit Japanese movies such as Akira KUROSAWA's Ran, Yohjro TAKITA's Onmyoji and Isshin INUDO and Masatsugu HIGUCHI's The Floating Castle [2012]. As well as acting, he is committed to directing plays that merge classic and contemporary, east and west. In addition to his own creations of "new" kyogen pieces including The Kyoden of Errors, based on Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors, which toured to London's Globe Theatre in 2002 and to the U.S. in 2005, his directing credits include Kuni-nusu-bito ( from Richard III), Yabu no Naka ( In a Thicket), Kagamikaja (Mirror Servant) and Atsushi (from the late Atsushi NAKAJIMA's Sangetsu-ki and Meijinden), for which he was awarded the Asahi Performing Arts Award and the Kinokuniya Theatre Award in 2005 for direction and composition.
In 2013, Mansai performed in the traditional piece SANBASO, divine dance, a collaboration with world-renowned visual artist Hiroshi SUGIMOTO that was co-presented by the Japan Society and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and took place in the Guggenheim rotunda. Mansai also brought to the Japan Society his production of Macbeth in the same year, in which he directed and played the title role.
He has received the National Arts Festival New Artists Award and the Ministry of Education's Art Encouragement Prize for New Artists. Mansai holds the distinction of important intangible Cultural Property: Nohgaku. He had been the Artistic Director of Setagaya Public Theatre since 2002 to 2022, and Director of Hogaku (Japanese traditional music) in Ishikawa Ongakudo since 2021.
Natsuki IKEZAWA
Writer, poet, and translator. IKEZAWA was born in 1945 in Obihiro, Hokkaido. During 1975-1976 he lived in Greece, and lived in Okinawa during 1994-2004. Currently, he is based in Azumino, Nagano. From the period in Greece, he started his writing career with poetry and literature translation.
His novel Still Lives, published in 1987, won the 98th Akutagawa Prize in 1988, and The Navidad Incident: The Downfall of Matías Guili was awarded the Tanizaki Prize in 1993, followed by A Burden of Flowers winning the Mainichi Publishing Culture Award in 2000. With lucid thinking and repeated exploration of the relationship between nature and humans, IKEZAWA has created plenty of works.
Since 2014 he has commenced the "impala e-books", a plan of digitalizing his full works. After the publication of the 30 volumes of The Complete Anthology of World Literature Edited by Natsuki IKEZAWA, he continued to publish the 30 volumes of The Complete Anthology of Japanese Literature Edited by Natsuki IKEZAWA. His translated works include Mother Night by Kurt VONNEGUT, among others.
Ever since his youth, he has been a fan of Kyogen actor Manzo NOMURA (the Sixth), one of the Living National Treasures of Japan. Having frequently seen live performances of Manzo NOMURA onstage, he stepped into the field of Kyogen. Ayu, a piece presented in the program, is based on IKEZAWA's same-titled short story adapted from foreign folklore.
