2026 Writing About Dance Workshop
Dance Writing — Connecting the Past, Present, and Future of Dance
Dance, as well as performing arts, is a fleeting creative work. The movement, imagery, rhythm, and the harmony and tension between bodies, always become memories after the curtain falls. In that case, can dance be preserved as a readable, accumulated and revisited landscape through writing?
Dance writing takes many forms. Whether through essays, documentary writing, criticism, or academic research, writing can serve as a bridge between performances that exist only in the present moment and readers who were never there, allowing dance experiences to be extended and passed on.
In connection with the Mapping Taiwan Dance Memory project, the 2026 Writing About Dance Workshop will explore the possibilities of dance writing through three key dimensions: the body, the record , and the history. Beginning with the question "Why does the body move this way?", the workshop traces how culture, history, and memory leave their imprints on bodily movement, and experience the transformative power of words. From criticism and reportage to interviews, research writing, and promotional copy, participants will learn how writing can retranslate live performance into text.
Writing plays a vital role within the performing arts ecosystem. This workshop aims to invite more individuals who are deeply engaged with dance to join the practice of writing, while also cultivating writers with advanced professional skills. The program will offer both Advanced Program and Open Program, alongside periods of shared learning designed to foster exchange and dialogue among participants from diverse backgrounds and levels of experience.
Time & Course Content
Saturday, April 11, 2026 - Sunday, April 12, 2026 10:00-18:00
Module A|Perspectives on the Body
Rooted in the dynamic pulses of diverse cultures, this program explores a multi-layered approach to "moving, observing, and writing" the body. The journey unfolds through the physical energy of Indigenous contemporary dance, progresses into the improvisational possibilities of the modern body, and weaves in the critical lens of dance practitioners. By disrupting habitual ways of seeing, participants are guided to expand their sensory horizons and decode the cultural ciphers embedded in every movement.
Saturday, June 27, 2026 - Sunday, June 28, 2026 10:00-18:00 (* Professional-track participants are required to attend performance viewings till 20:30)
Module B|Gravity of the Record
Dance is translated and preserved through diverse media, where the act of documentation inherently reshapes the creative process. By granting works and individuals a second life, these records teach us to capture the precise essence of spirit and movement. This practice transforms fleeting moments into a lasting legacy—one that resonates with emotional depth and the enduring warmth of human life.
Saturday, August 22, 2026 - Sunday, August 23, 2026 10:00-18:00
Module C|Traces of the History
How did the aesthetics of dance evolve into what we see today? By retracing the pivotal footsteps within art history and dance’s development, this program uncovers the origins of contemporary bodily forms. Amidst the delicate traces left by time, participants learn to engage in dialogue with different eras, reconstructing narrative trajectories that are deeply rooted in this land.
Friday, November 27, 2026 - Sunday, November 29, 2026 10:00-18:00 (*2026 Taiwan Dance Platform program appreciation for Advanced)
Module D|Compelling Narrative in Practice ( Only for Advanced )
The true power of writing lies in its journey from the classroom into the public sphere. This process empowers writers to reclaim their narrative agency, transforming individual insights into a definitive public voice.
