The 2026 Weiwuying Organ Festival's second concert, "Echoes of Giants," opens a magnificent chapter this year. Maestro CHIEN Wen-pin leads the Kaohsiung Symphony Orchestra alongside organ legend Olivier LATRY for a musical dialogue across eras.
The program opens with romantic excerpts from BERLIOZ's ROMÉO et JULIETTE, followed by the organ's versatile depth—from DUPRÉ's sacred, solemn soundscapes to SALONEN's monumental Sinfonia concertante. As masters of past and present converge, the majestic pipes of Weiwuying will resonate in a breathtaking sonic feast of ultimate splendor.

CHIEN Wen-pin, General and Artistic Director of the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying), was born in 1967, graduated from the National Taiwan Academy of Arts and received a Master's degree at the National University for Music and Performing Arts Vienna. CHIEN joined the Deutsche Oper am Rhein (Düsseldorf/Duisburg, Germany) in 1996 and served as "Kapellmeister" for 22 years. From 1998 to 2004, he was Resident Conductor of the Pacific Music Festival (Sapporo, Japan).
From 2001 to 2007, he was Music Director of National Symphony Orchestra (Taiwan Philharmonic); during his tenure the orchestra has achieved several milestones such as creating Subscription series, commissioning Taiwanese composers, introducing an opera series which coroneted with the first production of the complete Der Ring des Nibelungen by Richard WAGNER in Chinese speaking areas, upon orchestra's 20th anniversary in 2006. From 2014 to 2016, CHIEN was Artistic Advisor of the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra. In addition, CHIEN was the winner of the "National Award for Arts" in 2014.

Established as the leading ambassador for his instrument, French organist Olivier LATRY has performed in the world's most prestigious venues, been the guest of top orchestras throughout the world with renowned conductors, recorded with major labels, and premiered an impressive number of works. Appointed as titular organist at Notre-Dame in Paris at the age of 23, and Organist Emeritus at Orchestre National de Montréal since 2012, LATRY is an accomplished, thoughtful and adventurous musician, exploring all possible fields of organ music, with an exceptional talent as an improviser.
LATRY regularly appears in prestigious venues across the globe, including Berlin Philharmonie, Philharmonie de Paris, Walt Disney Hall Los Angeles, Tokyo's Suntory Hall, among others and as a soloist with orchestras such as Berlin Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, Orchestre de Paris, Orchestre symphonique de Montréa etc, and has worked with famous conductors like Myung-Whun CHUNG, Andris NELSONS, Kent NAGANO, Edo de WAART, and Jukka-Pekka SARASTE among others.
In 2023 Olivier premiered Esa-Pekka SALONEN's Sinfonia concertante for organ and orchestra conducted by the composer himself. Recent highlights include premieres of Pascal DUSAPIN's Waves for organ and orchestra, and past premieres have included Kaija SAARIAHO's Maan Varjot for organ and orchestra in 2014, Michael GANDOLFI's Ascending Light in 2015, Benoît MERNIER's Organ Concerto for the inauguration of Brussels' BOZAR new organ in 2017, and the German premiere of Thierry ESCAICH's Third Organ Concerto in 2019.
His strong attachment to French organ repertoire led him to record MESSIAEN's complete works for organ as well as a FRANCK album for Deutsche Grammophon, and SAINT-SAËNS' Symphony No. 3 for Ondine Records. In 2013, he released Trois siècles d'orgue à Notre Dame de Paris featuring music written by former and current titular organists at Notre-Dame. In 2016 he recorded a recital on Philharmonie de Paris' Rieger organ for Warner Classics. In 2019, he started a collaboration with the label La Dolce Volta with an album called BACH to the Future. His latest album on La Dolce Volta LISZT: Inspirations was recorded on the organ of Philharmonie de Paris and released in 2021.

Founded in 1981, officially renamed the "Kaohsiung Symphony Orchestra" (KSO) by 2000. The present chairperson of the Foundation is WANG Wen-tsui, Director of Kaohsiung City's Bureau of Cultural Affairs. CHU Hung-chang is the CEO of the Foundation, and the resident conductor is WU Yao-yu.
Taking pride as the music ambassador of Kaohsiung City, the KSO has collaborated with a variety of prestigious conductors and renowned artists. The KSO strives to incorporate classical and cross-border performances into its repertoire, permeated with its unique passion.
Recently, the orchestra has played a pivotal role in the Kaohsiung Spring Arts Festival and successfully established the reputation of the "Grassland Concert" and the full-scale opera productions, has also been frequently invited to participate in Weiwuying Presented Programs of Weiwuying National Art and Culture Center.
On the international stage, KSO has been successively invited to perform in the USA, Japan, Singapore, China and Hong Kong. KSO will keep taking the international-level orchestra as the goal of self-enhancement and growth, steadily stepping beyond countries and borders, and moving forward firmly.
